Biography of Nate Powell
Nate Powell is an American comic book author, publisher, and musician. He is known for creating graphic novels, which are long-form works in the comic book format that originated in the United States in the 1940s.

Early Life and Career
In 1992, at the age of 14, Nate began publishing comics with Mike Lierly and Nathan Wilson. He graduated from North Little Rock High School in 1996 and then attended George Washington University in Washington, DC. In 2000, Powell completed his studies at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
Comic Book and Music Ventures
Powell received a grant from 'Shakespeare & Company' to publish his own comic book, which allowed him to release his first book in the 'Walkie Talkie' series through the label 'Food Chain'. He also founded the punk label 'Harlan Records' and played in several punk bands, including 'Universe', 'Gioteens', 'Boomfancy', 'Divorce Chord', 'WAIT', and 'Soophie Nun Squad'.
Comedy Sketch Show and Adult Care
From 1997 to 2002, Powell performed and wrote scripts for the comedy sketch show 'Fun And Games' in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Additionally, from 1999 to 2009, he provided care for adults with developmental disabilities.
Residential Moves and Awards
Powell moved from North Little Rock to Great Falls, Montana in 1980 and then to Montgomery, Alabama in 1983. He returned to North Little Rock in 1988 after his father retired from the Air Force. In early 2004, Powell settled in Bloomington, Indiana.
His graphic novel, 'Swallow Me Whole', won two Ignatz Awards for 'Outstanding Debut' and 'Outstanding Artist' in 2008. In March 2009, Nate was named a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in the category of 'Young Adult Fiction' for the same novel. He won the Eisner Award for 'Best Original Graphic Novel' and was also nominated in the 'Best Writer/Artist' category.
Current Projects
Currently, Powell is working on the graphic novel 'The Silence Of Our Friends', which is planned for release in 2012. The novel is co-authored by Mark Long and Jim Demonakos. Another graphic work, the novella 'Year Of The Beasts' written by Cecil Castellucci, is also set to be published in 2012. In addition to his comic book career, Powell occasionally performs hip-hop music under the pseudonym Featherweight MC.
