Biography of Natsuo Kirino
Natsuo Kirino is a contemporary Japanese writer who was born in 1951. She is the middle child among three siblings and has two brothers, one who is six years older and another who is five years younger. Kirino traveled to many Japanese cities with her father, who was an architect. At the age of 14, she moved to Tokyo.
In 1975, Kirino got married and in 1981, she gave birth to her daughter. She obtained her law degree from Seikei University in 1974. In her search for her calling, Kirino explored various fields of work. She worked at a movie theater and attended screenwriting courses. It was only when she turned 30 years old that she seriously considered a career as a writer.
Literary Career
Kirino made her literary debut in 1984 when she published her first romance novels. However, these novels were not popular in Japan, and she couldn't make a living from their publication. She also didn't feel a calling to continue writing in that genre. In the early 1990s, Kirino decided to focus on the psychological aspects of crime and began publishing her first detective novels.
She has authored several short story collections and a series of novels, becoming one of the most popular contemporary Japanese writers. Her breakthrough came in 1997 with the publication of her novel "Out," which won the Mystery Writers of Japan Award and was a finalist for the Edgar Allan Poe Award in 2004 (English translation). Kirino is also the recipient of the Edogawa Rampo Prize in 1993 for her debut detective novel, "Rain Falling on My Face," and the Naoki Prize for her novel "Tender Cheeks."
