Biography of Nelly Shahin - A Fighter with Harlequin Ichthyosis
Nelly Shahin, a British woman, is the oldest living person with a rare skin condition known as Harlequin Ichthyosis. Unlike some internal diseases that silently deteriorate a person's health, Harlequin Ichthyosis is visible from the outside, causing severe skin abnormalities. From an early age, Nelly's skin resembled scales, making it tough and prone to cracking, which allowed bacteria to attack her vulnerable inner layers. The deformities caused by the condition often affect organs like the ears and nose.

Overcoming Challenges and Setting Records
Harlequin Ichthyosis often leads to death in infancy, but Nelly Shahin managed to survive until the age of 26, setting a record for the longest lifespan with this condition. Despite her condition, Nelly leads an active lifestyle, participating in sports and enjoying shopping. Living with Harlequin Ichthyosis presents numerous challenges, and the constant stares of others and even minor injuries can lead to serious infections and weeks of bed rest. Nevertheless, Nelly does not give up and takes care of her skin by regularly moisturizing it with special products. When venturing outside, she wears protective clothing to shield her delicate skin from harmful bacteria.

Early Life and Family
Nelly Shahin, born Nasrit Shahin, is one of nine children. Sadly, only four of them, including Nelly, survived. The other four children succumbed to Harlequin Ichthyosis in infancy. Nelly's father passed away early in her life, and her eldest brother took on the role of the family's guardian. He paid special attention to Nasrit's well-being, sometimes overly so.
Inspiring Others and Embracing Life
Nelly Shahin looks optimistically toward the future. Considering that most Harlequin Ichthyosis patients do not survive past the age of 10, reaching the age of 26 is a remarkable achievement. Nelly claims that she has fully accepted her condition and does not let the reactions of others affect her. By opening up and transforming from an introvert into a sociable woman, Nelly has discovered an inner source of energy that allows her to enjoy life despite the challenges. She now frequently appears on television shows and advocates for her siblings who share the same condition. Currently, there are only 14 known cases of Harlequin Ichthyosis in the entire United Kingdom, but Nelly remains undeterred by the rarity. She actively engages with other patients through Facebook, exchanging tips and techniques to make their lives easier.
Pursuing Passions and Defying Expectations
Nelly Shahin refuses to let her delicate skin confine her to a sterile room. She continues to actively participate in sports, with football being her favorite. Despite the limitations imposed by her condition, Nelly's determination remains unshaken, proving that one can find joy in life regardless of the circumstances.
