Origins
In the depths of 1996, three Moscow lads—Alexander Bordunov ("Soleny"), Mikhail Vasilyev ("Zeleny"), and Sergei Karatay ("SCAR")—found themselves united by a shared passion for hip-hop. Their initial recordings, done in the comfort of their own homes, marked the humble beginnings of the group known as Necessary Things.
First Performances
With their infectious energy, Necessary Things made their public debut and instantly captivated audiences. Their charismatic stage presence and original approach soon earned them a loyal following. At the prestigious Rap Music Festival '96 in Moscow, the group captured the attention of the judges. They were awarded the Special Prize for Originality and hailed as "the most promising team" by jury chairman Alexei Kozlov.
Collaboration and Growth
The group's early success attracted the attention of Studio Pavian Records, where they embarked on the production of their debut album. Necessary Things also began collaborating with backing vocalist Alexandra Antonovich, who added depth to their musical tapestry.
International Recognition
In 1997, Necessary Things stunned the music world by winning the Grand Prix at the Annual International Festival Rap-Music '97. Their triumph was a testament to their talent and originality, breaking them into the upper echelons of hip-hop.
Influences and Style
Necessary Things drew inspiration from renowned hip-hop acts such as Fugees, Beastie Boys, and Arrested Development. Their unique style was further shaped by the lyrical prowess of Russian cultural icons Vladimir Mayakovsky, Vladimir Vysotsky, and Viktor Tsoi.
Breaking Boundaries
Led by frontman Soleny, Necessary Things refused to conform to established norms. They challenged the conventions of the time and championed the notion that modern rap could shatter musical stereotypes and transcend societal constraints.
Debut Album and Beyond
The group's long-awaited debut album was finally released in the spring of the same year under the Pavian Records label. Its release marked a milestone in Necessary Things' career, further solidifying their position as one of the leading forces in Russian hip-hop.
