Biography of Neva Morris

Neva Morris was born on August 3, 1895, in Ames, Iowa. She was the youngest of four children in the Fried family. In 1914, Neva married Edward Leonard Morris, and together they had four children - Leslie, Mary Jane, Walter, and Betty Lee. The large family lived on a farm with Edward's parents, Gertrude Rutherford and Walter Leonard Morris, on a property of approximately 906,500 square meters.

Despite her responsibilities as a mother and farmer's wife, Neva managed to help all her children attend the University of Iowa. She also took care of raising chickens, pigs, and dairy cattle on the farm. Neva's son-in-law, 90-year-old Tom Wickham, who lived in the same nursing home as her, said, "She never wanted for anything, working on the farm her whole life and eating nutritious meals made from farm-raised meat, dairy products, and vegetables."

Neva's youngest son, Walter Morris, who turned 82, believes that his mother's secret to longevity was her passion for fast cars. With 80 years of driving experience, Neva never had a single accident. At the age of 90, she bought a 1985 model of the "Mercury Grand Marquis" and only stopped driving at the age of 95.

After her husband passed away, Neva left the farm at the age of 99 and moved to the North Grand Care Center. In 1998, she relocated to the Northcrest community. According to Wickham, in March 2010, Neva lost her sight and hearing but continued to participate in the activities of the nursing home.

Neva Morris held the title of the oldest living resident in the United States for one month before passing away on April 6, 2010, in her own bed in Iowa. She is survived by one son, eight grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren. Neva was known for her love of singing in a women's choir group and had a special fondness for the song "You Are My Sunshine."
