Prime Minister of Vietnam: Nguyen Tan Dung

Early Life and Military Service

Nguyen Tan Dung was born on November 17, 1961 in Ca Mau province, South Vietnam. At the age of 12, he joined the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam, which later became part of the People's Army of Vietnam. Dung provided first aid, assisted in communications, cared for the sick, and served as a medic during the Vietnam War. He suffered four injuries and received a 2/4 disability rating.

Medical Training and Rise in Politics

After the war, Dung studied medicine and earned a bachelor's degree. He entered the Communist Party of Vietnam in 1967 and continued his military career. He was elected to the Politburo at the eighth, ninth, and tenth party congresses.

Prime Ministerial Tenure

Dung became Vietnam's Prime Minister in 2006, succeeding Phan Van Khai. He was the first post-1945 August Revolution communist leader and the youngest person to hold the position (age 57). Having spent his life in South Vietnam during the war, Dung was unique for a high-ranking communist leader.

Dung was re-elected to his post in 2007. He oversaw Vietnam's accession to the WTO and promoted economic growth, aiming for an annual GDP growth rate of 8-9%. He stressed the importance of diversifying industry and curbing credit consumption to compete as a "world factory" on the Chinese model.

Notable Achievements

Led Vietnam's entry into the WTO as a full member.
Oversaw significant economic growth during his tenure.
Promoted the diversification of Vietnam's industry.

Initiated policies aimed at reducing credit consumption and attracting foreign investment.
