Early Life
Nicholas Itkin, an American fencer, was born on March 24, 1998, in Los Angeles, California. He hails from a Jewish family, with his father, Michael ("Misha"), being a fencing coach and his mother, Tatiana, a former rhythmic gymnast. His sister, Julia, competed for the United States national rhythmic gymnastics team.
Career
Junior Success (2015-2019)Itkin began his fencing journey at his father's International Fencing Center in Los Angeles, which was founded in 2003. His early achievements include a bronze medal at the 2015 Cadet World Junior Fencing Championships and a Pan American Cadet Championship gold medal in 2016. He added a silver medal at the Pan American Junior Championships in 2017.
His crowning glory came at the 2018 World Junior Fencing Championships in Verona, Italy, where he claimed the gold medal in the foil event. Itkin's triumph marked the first time an American had won the title. In the same year, he became the first American fencer to capture gold medals at the NCAA Fencing Championships, the US National Fencing Championships, and the World Junior Championships in the same year.
Senior Breakthrough (2020-2023)
Itkin's senior debut was equally impressive. He won the 2020 Paris World Cup, becoming the youngest fencer ranked in the world's top ten in foil. In 2021, he secured the US National Championship in Philadelphia and represented Team USA at the Tokyo Olympics, where he took home a bronze medal in the men's team foil event.
The 2022 Pan American Fencing Championships yielded another team gold for Itkin, along with an individual bronze. At the 2022 World Fencing Championships in Cairo, Egypt, he earned an individual bronze medal in the men's foil, becoming the first American and the third American fencer overall to win back-to-back individual medals at World Fencing Championships.
Itkin's consistent performance continued in 2023. He won the US National Championship for the fifth time, establishing himself as one of the most successful American foilists in indoor national championships. Notably, he secured a silver medal in the individual men's foil at the 2023 World Fencing Championships, becoming the first American and the third American fencer overall to win individual medals at consecutive World Fencing Championships.
World No. 1 and Olympic Bronze (2024-Present)
Itkin's dominance extended into the 2024 season. He clinched a gold medal at the Foil Grand Prix in Washington, D.C., defeating top-ranked fencers such as Daniele Garozzo and Enzo Lefort. This victory propelled him to the top of the world rankings in men's foil.
At his second Olympic Games in Paris 2024, Itkin made history by winning an individual bronze medal. He added another fourth-place finish in the team foil event. With his outstanding achievements, Itkin solidified his place as one of the greatest American fencers of all time.
