Early Life and Background
Nicola McDermott was born on December 28, 1996, in North Gosford, Australia. Her mother is of Croatian descent from the island of Korcula, Croatia. McDermott holds a dual citizenship of Australia and Croatia. She is currently pursuing a degree in biochemistry at the University of Sydney.
Christian Faith
McDermott is a devout Christian and a member of an undisclosed Pentecostal denomination. She became a Christian while attending a youth camp at the age of 16. Her faith plays a significant role in her life and is more important to her than her athletic career. She believes that her identity and worth are not defined by her achievements but by God's love.
Athletic Career
McDermott began competing in high jump at an early age. She represented Australia in the women's high jump at the 2017 World Championships in Athletics and the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where she won a bronze medal. She set a personal best of 1.96 meters in Ostrava, Czech Republic, on June 20, 2019.
Personal Bests and Records
On August 29, 2020, McDermott cleared 1.98 meters in Sindelfingen, Germany, placing her second on the all-time Australian high jumpers list. She broke the Australian and Oceanian records with a personal best of 2.00 meters on April 18, 2021. On July 4, 2021, she improved her personal best to 2.01 meters in Stockholm, Sweden.
Tokyo 2020 Olympics
At the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, McDermott won the silver medal in the women's high jump on August 7, 2021. She finished behind Russian athlete Mariya Lasitskene, who won the gold medal. McDermott set a new personal best of 2.02 meters in the final.
Everlasting Crowns Ministry
In addition to her athletic career, McDermott leads Everlasting Crowns, a ministry dedicated to encouraging and equipping athletes. She uses her platform as an athlete to share her Christian faith and inspire others.
