Early Life and Education

Born in Romania, Ştefan Niculescu displayed a passion for music from a young age. He pursued his musical education at the Bucharest Conservatory, studying under renowned mentors, Marțian Negrea and Theodor Rogalski. Concurrently, Niculescu expanded his academic horizons by studying mathematics and architecture at the University of Bucharest.

Professional Career

After completing his studies, Niculescu held the position of Head of the Music Department at the Romanian Radio and Television from 1963 to 1971. Subsequently, he became a professor of orchestration at the Bucharest Conservatory, where he served as its rector from 1990 to 1992.

Musical Contributions

Niculescu's compositional output encompasses a diverse range of genres, including symphonic, choral, chamber, and theatrical music. He was instrumental in orchestrating Romanian musical folklore, bringing it to a wider audience. His scholarly contributions include numerous articles on orchestration, the history of Romanian music, and musical theory.

Recognition and Awards

Niculescu's talent and dedication were acknowledged through various prestigious awards. In 1969, he emerged as a laureate of the Queen Elisabeth International Competition. Furthermore, he was the recipient of five awards from the Romanian Composers' Union.
