Biography of Nicolien Sauerbreij

Nicolien Sauerbreij, a Dutch professional snowboarder, was born on July 31, 1979, in the small village of De Hoef in the Utrecht province of the Netherlands. From a young age, Nicolien had a love for sports, including mountain biking, horseback riding, surfing, ice skating, sailing, and martial arts. Her parents, who were also avid enthusiasts of an active lifestyle, encouraged her sporting talents. Her father, who is still her coach, and her brother, who is also a professional snowboarder, have played significant roles in her career.

Early Snowboarding Career

Nicolien received her first snowboard at the age of twelve, a gift from her father who also became her first teacher. By the age of 14, she achieved fourth place at the Junior World Championships, a moment that marked a turning point in her career. From then on, snowboarding became more than just a hobby for Nicolien; it became her potential future profession. However, professional success did not come easily.

In 2001, Nicolien secured second place at the competitions in Mont-Sainte-Anne, Canada, marking her first significant victory in the sport. Her first World Cup win arrived in 2002 in Valle Nevado, Chile, followed by another cup in Maribor, Slovenia, in the same year. She went on to claim victories in the World Cup championships in 2003, 2007, and 2010.

Olympic Journey

Nicolien's luck at the Olympic Games was not as consistent as her success in the World Cup. In the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, she faced high expectations but finished only twenty-fourth. She even temporarily left university to focus entirely on her sport, hoping for a breakthrough. In the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy, she improved her performance but still failed to crack the top ten, finishing twelfth. Despite these setbacks, Nicolien remained resilient.

Long-Awaited Victory

With numerous World Cup victories fueling her confidence, Nicolien never doubted that she would eventually triumph in the Olympic Games. Her perseverance paid off in 2010 when she won the gold medal in the women's parallel slalom event at the Vancouver Olympics. This long-awaited achievement became a well-deserved reward for Nicolien's relentless dedication and hard work.
