His mother's background is less known, but his brothers' names—Vadim, Vasili, Volodya, and Alesha—suggest Russian roots.

Moving to Canada and Loss of Brother

At the age of nine, Niels' family relocated to Montreal, Canada. While most of the Schneider family pursued creative endeavors, Niels initially resisted the notion of following in his father's footsteps. However, the tragic death of his older brother Vadim in a car accident in 2003 marked a turning point for him.

Early Career and Breakthrough

Niels began his acting training at theater courses in Quebec. He also worked in voiceover and dubbing for films and cartoons. In 2007, he made his screen debut in the film "Taste of Oblivion." His breakthrough came in Xavier Dolan's 2009 film "I Killed My Mother," where he played a supporting role.

Collaboration with Xavier Dolan

Niels' collaboration with Xavier Dolan proved to be highly successful. In Dolan's next film, the romantic drama "Heartbeats" (2010), he landed the lead role. His performance as the carefree Nicolas earned him the "Male Revelation" award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Parisian Debut and Critical Acclaim

In 2012, Niels returned to France to star in "Atomic Age." He also received a nomination for "Most Promising Young Actor" at the Lumière Awards for his role in the thriller "Orders." His portrayal of Pierre Ulmann in the drama "Diamond Island" (2017) earned him the prestigious César Award for Best Actor.
