Early Life and EducationNikolaus Harnoncourt was born into an aristocratic family in Graz, Austria. His mother was a descendant of Archduke Johann Baptist of Austria, and his father was a diplomat. Harnoncourt studied music in Vienna, showing exceptional talent on the cello and viola da gamba.
Foundation of Concentus Musicus
In 1953, Harnoncourt and his wife, violinist Alice, founded the early music ensemble Concentus Musicus. This group specialized in performing baroque music on authentic instruments, using historically informed practices. Harnoncourt served as the ensemble's conductor and played the baroque cello and viola da gamba.
Early Career
Harnoncourt made his debut as an opera conductor at La Scala in Milan in 1970. He also collaborated with Gustav Leonhardt in recording Bach's church cantatas, using authentic performance techniques. Harnoncourt later worked with other European orchestras, including the Concertgebouw.

Harnoncourt was married to violinist Alice Harnoncourt, and their daughter, Elisabeth von Magnus, is a flutist and opera singer. In addition to his musical career, Harnoncourt played the role of Prince Leopold of Anhalt in Jean-Marie Straub's film "Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach" (1967).
