Early Life and Education

Nikolai Alekseevich Bogoraz was born on February 1, 1874, in Taganrog, Russia. Before his baptism, he was known as Heinrich Maksimovich Bogoraz. His father was a physician, and his brother was the renowned ethnographer Vladimir G. Bogoraz.

Nicholas attended the Taganrog Gymnasium for two years before transferring to the Second Tiflis Gymnasium, where he graduated with a gold medal in 1892. He then enrolled in the St. Petersburg Military Medical Academy and graduated with honors in 1897.

Surgical Career



Nicholas Bogoraz began his surgical career at the Warsaw University, where he became a professor. In 1918, he relocated to Rostov with the university's surgical faculty.

Bogoraz was a pioneer in the fields of phalloplasty and implantation surgery of the penis. His expertise and innovative techniques earned him recognition as a leading surgeon of his time.


In September 1920, Nicholas Bogoraz suffered a severe accident when he was hit by a tram while rushing to a Red Army hospital. He lost both his legs but survived thanks to the timely intervention of Professor N.V. Pariisky, who provided immediate first aid.


Despite his physical challenges, Bogoraz continued his surgical career. In 1943, he became head of the surgical department at the 2nd Moscow Medical Institute and also served as a leading surgeon at the N.N. Burdenko Main Military Hospital.


Nikolai Alekseevich Bogoraz passed away in Moscow on July 15, 1952. He left behind a legacy of surgical innovation and dedication to his patients.
