Early Life and Education
Nikolai Dementei was born on May 25, 1930. He graduated from the Belarusian Agricultural Academy in 1959 and the Higher Party School under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) in 1964.
Career in Agriculture and the Communist Party
Dementei worked as the chief agronomist and director of the Machine Tractor Station in the Polotsk district. He joined the CPSU in 1957 and began working in the party in 1958. In 1970, he became an inspector for the Communist Party of Belarus (CPB) within the CPSU. In 1974, he was appointed secretary of the Vitebsk Regional Committee of the CPB. In 1977, he was made head of the agricultural department of the CPB.
Political Career in Soviet Union and Belarus
From 1979 to 1989, Dementei was the Secretary of the CPB, responsible for agriculture. In 1989, he was elected as a People's Deputy of the USSR. From July 28, 1989, to May 15, 1990, he served as the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet and Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.
On May 18, 1990, Dementei became the Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Belarusian SSR, 12th convocation. He held this position until August 25, 1991. During his chairmanship, the Supreme Soviet adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Belarusian SSR on July 27, 1990. In 1991, he publicly supported the State Emergency Committee (GKChP) during the August Putsch in Moscow.
Post-Soviet Career
From January 13, 1997, to January 19, 2000, Dementei was a member of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus under the presidential quota. He passed away on July 10, 2018, in the presidential clinic in Zhdanovichi.
Family
Nikolai Dementei was the uncle of Sergei Kolyakin, the leader of the Belarusian United Left Party "Fair World."
