Early Life and Education

Nikolai Porfirevich Kandelwas born on October 17, 1889, in the village of Kulachi. His early life and education are not well-documented.

Artistic Career

Renowned Sculptor

In 1926, Kandel graduated from the Leningrad Academy of Arts under the tutelage of A. T. Matveev. After completing his studies, he became a professor at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts in 1944. Among his notable students were Elguja Amashukeli and Tamara Abakelia.

Legacy of Portraits and Monuments

Kandel is recognized for his masterful sculpting of portraits, including those of the artist Lado Gudiashvili, folk artist Akaki Khorava, and academician Nikolai Muskhelishvili. He also created the monument to Philip Makharadze in Ozurgeti, formerly known as Makharadze.
