Early Life and Military Career
Andrei Dorofeyevich Denisov was a prominent Soviet military commander who rose to the rank of Lieutenant General of Artillery in 1940. He graduated from the Tiflis Cadet Corps and an artillery училище (military school), and served in the First World War as a platoon commander and artillery division adjutant, attaining the rank of Lieutenant.
Service in the Armenian Republic Army
From January 1918 to November 1920, Denisov served in the national army of the Republic of Armenia as assistant battery commander and later battery commander.
In the Red Army
After the collapse of the Armenian Republic, Denisov joined the Red Army in late 1920. He held various positions, including artillery battery and division commander, and assistant chief of artillery for a division.
Academic and Staff Positions
In 1928, Denisov graduated from the Frunze Military Academy and became an instructor at the Sumy Artillery училище. He later served as an adjunct at the Frunze Military Academy, senior director of the academy's artillery department, assistant chief of staff for combat training in the Red Army, and assistant chief of artillery for artillery училище.
Combat Experience in Spain
Denisov gained combat experience during the Spanish Civil War, where he served with distinction.
Leadership Roles and the Soviet-Finnish War
In 1938, Denisov was promoted to the rank of Brigade Commander and assumed command of important military positions. During the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940, he served as chief of artillery for the 8th Army. He subsequently became chief of artillery for the Far Eastern Front.
World War II and Demise
At the start of the Great Patriotic War (World War II), Denisov was chief of artillery for the Western Special Military District. Following the disastrous defeat of the Western Front in the Bialystok-Minsk Offensive, he was arrested on July 8, 1941. Accused of criminal negligence, he was sentenced to death by the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR on September 17, 1941. The sentence was carried out on October 16, 1941, and he was buried at the Donskoye Cemetery in Moscow.
Rehabilitation and Legacy
Denisov was posthumously rehabilitated. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of the Red Banner of the Armenian SSR, and the Medal for 20 Years of Service in the Red Army.
