Nikolay Ostryakov

Nikolai Ostyakov was born on May 17 in Moscow to a working-class family. In 1932, after completing seven years of education, he joined the factory "Krasny Mettalist" as an apprentice. In March 1928, at the age of 16, he volunteered for the construction of the Turksib Railway.
Upon his return to Moscow in 1930, Ostyakov retrained as an auto mechanic and later became a bus driver. However, his passion for aviation eventually led him to enroll in the Central Flight School in Tushin in 1932.
Aviation Career
Upon graduating from flight school, Ostyakov became an instructor pilot and later joined the Higher Parachute School of Osoaviahim. In 1934, he was awarded the title "Master of Parachute Sport of the USSR." In 1935, he was decorated with the Order of the Red Star for his exceptional skills and achievements.
In 1936, Ostyakov played a key role in the Spanish Civil War, where he fought against the Francoists as a pilot in the International Brigades. He participated in over 250 successful bombing missions and was credited with shooting down an enemy fighter.
Appointment to the Black Sea Fleet
In December 1937, Ostyakov was appointed Commander of the Bomber Regiment of the Black Sea Fleet Air Force. He was only 26 years old at the time. Ostyakov's efforts transformed the regiment, introducing night flying and improving the overall capabilities of his pilots.
In April 1939, he was promoted to Commander of the Aviation Brigade in the Far East and subsequently became Commander of the Pacific Fleet Air Force in September of the same year. In June 1940, he was promoted to the rank of Major General of Aviation at the age of 29.
World War II and Death
With the outbreak of World War II, Ostyakov repeatedly requested transfer to the front. In October 1941, he was appointed Commander of the Black Sea Fleet Air Force.
During the defense of Sevastopol, Ostyakov played a pivotal role in organizing the city's air defenses. He participated in numerous air battles, flew reconnaissance missions, and personally shot down six enemy aircraft.
On April 24, 1942, Ostyakov was killed while on a bombing mission over Sarabuz. He was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his courage and leadership.
Legacy
Nikolai Ostyakov is remembered as one of the pioneers of Soviet parachuting and a master of aviation sports. He was a skilled pilot and a respected commander who dedicated his life to defending his country.
Streets and memorial museums in Moscow, Vladivostok, and other cities are named after him. His name also adorns a ship of the Maritime River Management.
