Nicolo Marcello: The 69th Doge of Venice
Nicolò Marcello served as the 69th Doge of Venice from 1474 until his death in 1474.
Early Life and Career
Born in 1399, Marcello held esteemed positions as Podesta of Brescia and Verona before his election as Doge. He also commanded the esteemed Council of Ten.
Election and Economic Policies
At 74 years of age, Marcello was elected Doge on August 13, 1474. He implemented prudent economic policies that led to an increase in the treasury of San Marco.
Political Initiatives
Marcello maintained the political stance of his predecessors. In 1468, Caterina Corner, the daughter of a prominent Venetian, married King Jacques II of Cyprus. Upon Jacques' unexpected death in 1473, Caterina became Queen. A plot by Spanish advisors to overthrow her resulted in the deaths of her uncle and nephew.
Intervention in Cyprus
Doge Marcello dispatched a squadron under Pietro Mocenigo to Cyprus, where they foiled the coup attempt. The conspirators fled, and their supporters were executed. Venice subsequently assumed control of the island, which was formally annexed in 1489.
Numismatic Legacy
During Marcello's reign, the silver half-lira coin was introduced. This coin became known as the "Marcello" among numismatists worldwide, regardless of the Doge who minted it.
Military Engagements and Final Years
Venice continued to face military conflict with the Ottoman Empire during Marcello's time. In 1474, the Ottoman army осаждала город Шкодер, but the Venetian garrison under Antonio Loredan held out until Mocenigo's squadron forced the Ottomans to lift the siege.
Nicolò Marcello died on December 1, 1474, and was buried in the Church of Santa Marina. His remains were later moved to the Basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo in 1818.
