Early Career and Flamengo
Nilton Coelho da Costa, better known as Bodinho, was born in Recife, Brazil. He began his football career with the modest club Ibis before moving to the prestigious Flamengo in the late 1940s. Despite his talent, he failed to achieve significant success with Flamengo.
Move to Rio Grande do Sul
In 1950, Bodinho relocated to Rio Grande do Sul, where he spent a year with Nacional, a club that later disbanded in 1958.
The "Golden Years" at Internacional
In 1951, Bodinho's career took a turn for the better when he joined Internacional under the guidance of coach Tite. Over the next seven seasons, he established himself as one of the most prolific forwards in Brazilian football. Alongside his teammate Larry, Bodinho formed a formidable duo that helped Internacional win the Campeonato Gaúcho four consecutive times from 1950 to 1953 and again in 1955.
In 1955, Bodinho achieved an extraordinary feat by scoring an impressive 25 goals in just 18 Campeonato Gaúcho games, averaging 1.4 goals per match.
International Recognition
Tite, who also coached the Brazilian national team, recognized Bodinho's talent and included him in the squad for the 1956 Pan American Games. Bodinho made five appearances for Brazil, scoring three goals, including a brace against Mexico and a goal against Costa Rica.
Later Years and Legacy
After retiring from football, Bodinho settled in Porto Alegre, where he passed away in 2003 at the age of 79 due to complications from hepatitis. He remains fondly remembered as one of Internacional's greatest strikers and a significant figure in Brazilian football history.
