The Birth of a Pop Icon: The Rise of O-Town

In a bid to create the ultimate pop sensation, renowned Orlando-based producer Lou Pearlman, the mastermind behind N'SYNC and Backstreet Boys, partnered with MTV to conduct nationwide auditions. Thousands of aspiring teenage performers answered the call, embarking on a rigorous selection process.

America's Choice: "Making of the Band"

ABC's popular summer TV show "Making of the Band" became the proving ground for the top 25 auditionees. Week after week, 6-8 million viewers tuned in to witness the formation of the ultimate boy band. From this intense competition emerged five talented young men: Ashley Parker Angel (19), Erik-Michael Estrada (21), Dan Miller (20), Trevor Penick (21), and Jacob Underwood (20). Together, they became O-Town, a name that playfully combined Pearlman's hometown of Orlando with the legendary Detroit label Motown.

Aristocratic Backing and Chart-topping Success

O-Town's rise to fame was sealed with a record deal from none other than Clive Davis, the founder of Arista Records (later rebranded as J Records). Their debut single, "Liquid Dreams," marked the inaugural release on the J Records label. Within its first week of availability, the song soared to the top of the US charts, achieving a remarkable debut at number six on Billboard.
