Birth and Early Life

Odilo Globočnik was born into a family with a military background. His father, Franz, was a retired Austrian cavalry officer who worked as a postal clerk. His grandfather's name was Franz Johann Globotschnig. Globočnik received his education at a cadet corps and graduated with honors from the Klagenfurt Higher Craftsmanship School as an engineer.

Nazi Party Involvement

Globočnik joined the Nazi Party in 1931 and became a member of the SS in 1934. He was actively involved in the National Socialist movement in Austria and held various positions within the party. In 1933, he was arrested for political activities and forced to flee to Germany.

Gauleiter of Vienna

After the Anschluss of Austria in 1938, Globočnik was appointed Gauleiter of Vienna. His actions against the opposition in the city drew criticism, and he was removed from his post in 1939.

SS and Police Leader in Lublin

Globočnik became the SS and Police Leader of the Lublin district in 1939. In this role, he was instrumental in the establishment and operation of concentration camps, including the infamous Majdanek and Treblinka.

Role in the Holocaust

Globočnik played a pivotal role in the Holocaust. He oversaw the liquidation of the Warsaw and Białystok ghettos. As the representative of the Reich SS Leader, he was responsible for the establishment of extermination camps in the General Government of occupied Poland.

Post-War Fate

Globočnik fled to Carinthia, Austria as Allied forces approached. He committed suicide by taking cyanide while in British custody in May 1945.

Controversial Legacy

Globočnik's actions during the Nazi era have made him a controversial figure. He is considered one of the architects of the Holocaust and is scorned for his role in its implementation.
