Early Life and Education

Odessa native Alex Garry was born on November 16, 1953, as a sixth-generation descendant of the port city's lineage. After graduating from music school with a focus on violin, he attended Odessa Gymnasium No. 92, formerly known as Iglicki Gymnasium. Alex's diverse academic pursuits continued at Odessa Institute of Marine Engineering and later Odessa University, where he studied geology and geography.

Military Service and Career Transitions

Following his military service in the Soviet Army, Alex embarked on a series of occupations. He worked as an archaeologist, geologist, laborer, cargo handler, mechanic, and scientific researcher. His journalistic career began with stints at various newspapers, including "Evening Odessa," "Odessa Herald," and "Regional Herald," as well as the magazine "Odessa."

Literary and Historical Contributions

Since 2000, Alex has been an editor and contributor to the literary, historical, and regional almanac, "Deribasovskaya - Richelievskaya." His numerous books and publications have graced the pages of periodicals in Ukraine, Russia, Germany, and Israel. His passion for Odessa has been widely recognized, garnering him the "For Love of Odessa" award from the Union of Journalists of Ukraine in 1999.

Civic Engagement and Recognition

Alex's civic involvement includes membership in the Historical and Regional Studies Section "Odessa" at Odessa House of Scientists, as well as the Odesa branch of the Ukrainian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments. He has also served on the Historical and Topographical Commission of the Odesa City Council. Among his accolades are the "Honorary Member of the World Club of Odessans," "Honorary Member of the European Interclub 'House of De Ribas,'" and "Odessa Citizen of the Year - 2004" in the category "Intelligence of Odessa."
