Early Life and EducationOlga Matejko, a renowned Soviet and Ukrainian actress, was born in Hostomel, Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine. After completing high school, she enrolled in the prestigious Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) and graduated in 1969.
Acting Career in Ukraine
Following her graduation, Matejko began her acting career at the Dovzhenko Film Studio. She appeared in numerous films within a short span of time, notably her breakout role as Zoya, a female pilot in Leonid Bykov's classic war film "Only Old Men Go to Battle" (1973). She also starred alongside her younger brother, Anatoly Matejko, in the film.
Notable Film Roles
Matejko continued to grace the screen with memorable performances, including her portrayal of Marfa in the "Lost Expedition" (1975) and "Golden River" (1976) film series. She effortlessly transitioned between leading roles and supporting appearances, showcasing her versatility as an actress.
Personal Life
Olga Matejko was married to Alexander Itygilov, a cinematographer and director at the Dovzhenko Film Studio. Tragically, Itygilov's involvement in the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 exposed him to a fatal dose of radiation, and he died from radiation sickness in 1990.
Emigration to the United States
In 1991, Matejko joined a delegation traveling to the United States and elected to remain there. She subsequently pursued a career in television, continuing to share her artistic talents with American audiences.
