Early Life and Education
Olivia Rodrigo was born on February 20, 2003 in California to a German-Irish mother and a Filipino father. Her family instilled in her Filipino traditions and cuisine. Olivia attended Lisa J. Mails Elementary School and Dorothy McElhinney Middle School. She has studied acting, singing, and participated in school plays since childhood.
Acting Career
Olivia made her acting debut in 2015 in the family comedy "American Girl," followed by a commercial. In 2016, she landed a role on Disney's "Bizaardvark" as Paige Olvera, which required her to relocate to Los Angeles. After three seasons, she joined the cast of "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" as Nini Salazar-Roberts, alongside Joshua Bassett and Matt Cornett.
Music Career
In 2020, Olivia signed with two music labels and released her debut single "Drivers License" in early 2021. The song broke Spotify streaming records and topped the Billboard Hot 100, as well as charts in Australia, the UK, and four other countries. Olivia later described the week of its release as "the most insane week of my life."
She followed up with the singles "Deja Vu," a song about romantic memories and heartbreak, and "Good 4 U," a blend of pop-punk, grunge, and pop-rock. The music video for "Good 4 U" features Olivia as a vengeful cheerleader, reminiscent of "The Princess Diaries" and "Jennifer's Body."
In May 2021, Olivia released her debut studio album, "Sour," which included the aforementioned singles. The album became certified platinum and was the first in music history to have three songs simultaneously in the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100.
Personal Life
Olivia dated her "High School Musical" co-star Joshua Bassett until 2020. Speculation arose that her song "Drivers License" was about their breakup and new relationship with actress Sabrina Carpenter. However, none of the parties have confirmed or denied the rumors.
