The Rise of B2K: A Teen Pop Sensation
In 2002, the boy band B2K emerged on the US music scene with their self-titled debut album, featuring Omarion, Raz-B, Lil' Fizz, and J-Boog, all of whom were under the age of 18 at the time.
Epic Beginnings
The group gained recognition through Epic Records Talent Search and toured with fellow teen rapper Lil Bow Wow before releasing any recordings. They also appeared in his music video for "Ghetto Girls."
Commercial Success
B2K's debut single "Uh Huh" topped the charts, followed by "Gots To Be." Their sophomore album, "Pandemonimum," was also a commercial success, fueled by a rabid fan base of teenage girls. The band embarked on extensive tours, was nominated for MTV Video Music and American Music Awards, and received "Best Group" recognition from Vibe magazine.
Soundtrack and Breakup
In 2004, B2K released the soundtrack for the film "You Got Served," in which all members starred. However, shortly after the film's release, the group abruptly disbanded, citing internal disagreements.
Omarion's Solo Path
Omarion (Omari Ishmael Grandberry) was the lead singer of B2K and became the first member to release a solo album. Mentored by his stepbrother, R&B artist Marques Houston, Omarion's upbringing in Inglewood, California, heavily influenced his music.
Debut Album: 'O'
Omarion's debut solo album, "O," showcased his songwriting abilities and featured guest appearances from Big Boi of Outcast. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard charts, proving Omarion's popularity remained strong post-B2K.
Personal Reflections
Despite his success, Omarion faced challenges during his solo career. "When you're solo, there's a lot more responsibility than when you're in a group," he said. "There's no one to slack off. It's all on you."
Dream Collaborations
Omarion shared his vision for a dream R&B/rap group, which included himself, Beyonce, and Jay-Z, whom he considered the greatest lyricist.
