Early Life and Education
Mikalojus Radvila Juodasis was born into a noble family in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. He received his education at home and later studied at a German university and possibly the University of Padua.
Political Career
<h2> Royal Service and Administrative Roles </h2>In the 1540s, Radvila Juodasis served as secretary to the Vilnius Voivode, Jan Hlebowicz. He later held high offices, including Marshal of Lithuania, Sub-Treasurer of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and Sub-Chancellor of Lithuania.
<h2> Diplomatic Missions and Peace Efforts </h2>
As a trusted advisor to King Sigismund II Augustus, Radvila Juodasis carried out important diplomatic missions. He negotiated a truce with Tsar Ivan the Terrible in 1553 and later proposed an alliance against the Crimean Khanate and the Turks. He also unsuccessfully attempted to establish peace during the Livonian War.
<h2> Religious Toleration and Patronship </h2>
Radvila Juodasis was a staunch advocate of religious tolerance. He converted from Orthodoxy to Protestantism and later to Arianism. He supported the establishment of a printing house in Nesvizh and patronized the works of the theologian Simon Budny.
<h2> Resistance to the Union of Lublin </h2>
Radvila Juodasis opposed the Union of Lublin, which would merge the Grand Duchy of Lithuania with Poland. He believed it threatened the autonomy of Lithuania.
<h2> Later Years and Legacy </h2>
After the Union of Lublin, Radvila Juodasis remained active in politics. He became Chancellor of Lithuania in 1579 and Vilnius Castellan in 1587. He died in exile in 1616.
Radvila Juodasis is remembered as a leading figure in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania during a time of political and religious transformation. His advocacy for religious tolerance and his strong support for Lithuania's independence left a lasting legacy.
