Biography of Ottmar Mergenthaler
Ottmar Mergenthaler was an American inventor of German origin. He was born on May 11, 1854 in Haechtela, Württemberg. At the age of 14, he joined a clockmaking workshop. In 1872, he moved to the United States and began working in a store that sold scientific instruments and tools in Washington.
An Idea is Born
One day, Mergenthaler had to fix defects in one of the new models of a typewriter, which led him to think about creating a typesetting machine that would eliminate the need for manual font composition.
The Invention of the Linotype
In 1884, Mergenthaler completed his work on the first line-casting typesetting machine, called the Linotype. After receiving a patent for his invention in 1884, he co-founded a company for the production of Linotype machines with J. Clephane. The first machines were installed in the composing room of the New York newspaper "Tribune" in 1886.
Ongoing Improvements and Legacy
In 1888, due to disagreements with the board of directors, Mergenthaler left the company but continued to work on improving his machine and proposed over 50 enhancements. Ottmar Mergenthaler passed away in Baltimore on October 28, 1899.
Ottmar Mergenthaler's invention revolutionized the printing industry by greatly increasing the speed and efficiency of typesetting. His Linotype machine became widely used and remained the primary method of typesetting for over a century. Mergenthaler's contribution to the field of printing technology has left a lasting impact and cemented his place in history as a pioneering inventor.
