Early Life and Education

Otto Gebühr was born on May 29, 1877, in Kettwig, Germany (now part of Essen). He completed his schooling and commercial training in Cologne before moving to Berlin in 1896.

Theatrical Career

Gebühr began his acting career as a member of a touring company and later secured a permanent position at the theater in Görlitz. From 1898 to 1908, he performed at the prestigious Royal Court Theater in Dresden. After joining the army during World War I, he returned to Berlin in 1917 and became a member of Max Reinhardt's Deutsches Theater.

Film Breakthrough

On the recommendation of his colleague Paul Wegener, Gebühr began appearing in films in 1917. His memorable role as Emperor Rudolf in "The Golem" (1920) caught the attention of filmmakers.

The Royal Portrayal

In 1922, Gebühr's striking resemblance to King Frederick the Great earned him the title role in the historical epic "Fridericus Rex." This iconic performance established him as the definitive cinematic Frederick, and he went on to portray the Prussian monarch in ten films, the last being "The Great King" in 1942.

Later Career

After World War II, Gebühr continued to work in theater and film, primarily in supporting roles. He passed away in Wiesbaden on March 14, 1954.
