Biography of Otto Sander

Born on June 30, 1941, in Hanover, Germany, Otto Sander was a German stage and film actor. He grew up in Kassel and completed his schooling in 1961. After serving in the navy, he returned home as a reserve officer. Sander studied acting, art history, and philosophy at the university, where he honed his skills. In 1965, he made his debut on the small theater stage in Düsseldorf while simultaneously studying and working.

Theater Career

In 1967, Sander left his studies and moved to Munich to pursue a professional acting career. He became closely associated with the renowned Berlin theater, Schaubuehne, under the direction of Peter Stein. From 1980, Sander performed on various theater stages in Berlin, including Schillertheater in 1981, Freie Volksbühne in 1985, and Komödie am Kurfürstendamm in 1989. In 2004, he played a role in Carl Zuckmayer's satirical play, "Der Hauptmann von Köpenick," at Schauspielhaus Bochum.

Film and Television Career

Sander began his film career with a short film called "Ludwig" in 1964. After a six-year hiatus, he appeared in the television series "John Klings Abenteuer" and the comedy film "Sonntags am Meer" in 1970. He returned to the big screen in 1974 with a small role in the thriller "Einer von uns beiden." Some of Sander's most notable film roles include Cassiel in Wim Wenders' "Der Himmel über Berlin" (1987) and its sequel "In weiter Ferne, so nah!" as well as Kapitänleutnant Philipp Thomsen in Wolfgang Petersen's war drama "Das Boot" (1981). In 1997, he starred alongside his stepson Ben Becker in the biographical film "Comedian Harmonists." Sander also played Professor Lorenz in "Das Versprechen" (1995), with his stepdaughter, Meret Becker, in the lead role.

Voice Acting

Sander's deep and powerful voice made him highly sought after for voice acting roles. He frequently served as a narrator or storyteller in documentaries and recorded numerous audiobooks. His voice can be heard in films such as "Krabat" (2008) and "Michelangelo Superstar" (2005). Notably, he provided the German voice for Dustin Hoffman in "Death Of A Salesman" (1985) and Ian McKellen in "Richard III" (1995).

Personal Life and Legacy

Sander was married to actress Monika Hansen and became the stepfather of her two children, Meret Becker and Ben Becker, both actors. He had two brothers, Adolf Sander, a lawyer, and Chris Sander, a computational biology specialist, as well as a sister named Marianne Sander, a bookseller. Sander passed away on September 12, 2013, in Berlin at the age of 72. Though the cause of his death was not disclosed, it is known that he battled cancer for several years.
