Biography of Paddy McAloon
Paddy McAloon is an English author, performer, guitarist, and keyboardist. He is best known as a member of the alternative pop-rock group 'Prefab Sprout', which he formed in 1978 in Newcastle. McAloon is considered by critics as one of the best but most underrated poet-songwriters of the 1980s.
Early Life
Patrick Joseph McAloon was born on June 7, 1957, in Durham, a small town on the northeast coast of England. He showed an early interest in music and began playing the guitar and keyboards at a young age.
Prefab Sprout
'Prefab Sprout' achieved significant popularity in the UK during the 1980s and early 1990s. Their commercial peak came in April 1988 when their single 'The King of Rock 'n' Roll' entered the top ten in the British charts. However, their success in the United States was relatively modest.
Currently, Paddy McAloon and his younger brother Martin McAloon, the bass guitarist, are the remaining original members of the group.
Songwriting and Collaborations
In addition to his work with 'Prefab Sprout', McAloon has also written songs for other artists, including Kylie Minogue, Cher, Wendy Matthews, Sondre Lerche, Danny Seward, and Jimmy Nail. Some of his songs have been covered by artists such as 'The Zombies' and Lisa Stansfield.
In 2008, McAloon's song 'Bonny' was included in the album 'Independents' Day 08', which featured covers by various artists.
Solo Projects
In 2003, McAloon released an instrumental album with spoken word titled 'I Trawl The Megahertz'. The album entered the British charts and received positive reviews.
In 2006, the second 'Prefab Sprout' album, 'Steve McQueen', was reissued and remastered by Thomas Dolby. It was released as a two-disc set in 2007, with the second disc featuring acoustic versions of most of the original album's tracks.
Recent Years and Health Issues
On September 7, 2009, McAloon and 'Prefab Sprout' released their last album, 'Let's Change the World with Music', along with the single 'Let There Be Music'.
In recent years, McAloon has been diagnosed with a progressive disease that affects his retina and deteriorates his vision. He has undergone several procedures to slow down the degeneration of his retina.
He has also been diagnosed with Meniere's disease, a disorder of the inner ear that affects his balance and causes dizziness.
