Childhood and Early Life

Panteley Petrovich Zonov was born on July 30, 1913, in the village of Zonovo, Kuibyshevsky District, Novosibirsk Region. Hailing from a farming family, he completed primary school and worked in a collective farm and a lumber mill. Zonov also attended a higher agricultural school in Prokopyevsk, Kemerovo Region.

Military Service

With the outbreak of World War II, Zonov joined the Soviet Army in July 1941. He graduated from the Novosibirsk Military-Political School and served on the Stalingrad, Don, Central, and 2nd Belorussian Fronts from August 1942.

Heroic Deeds

Dnieper River Crossing

Zonov's bravery was instrumental in the crossing of the Dnieper River. On September 28, 1943, he skillfully organized the loading of his battalion onto boats. Successfully crossing the river, they immediately engaged in combat. Advancing 8 kilometers, Zonov's battalion seized a bridgehead near the village of Vyalye. They repelled 11 enemy counterattacks, securing their position.

Battle of Chernigov

In the battles on the northeastern outskirts of Chernigov, Zonov repeatedly led his troops into bayonet attacks, successfully completing their objectives.

Hero of the Soviet Union

For his extraordinary courage and heroism, Zonov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on January 15, 1944. He was presented with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star Medal.

Post-War Career

After the war, Zonov participated in the Victory Parade in Moscow on June 24, 1945, carrying the Battle Standard of the Combined Regiment of the V. I. Lenin Military-Political Academy. In 1949, he graduated from the Academy and served as deputy commander of a communications regiment in Krasnodar. He went on to serve in the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany, and from 1956 to 1960, he was deputy head of the political department of the Rostov Higher Military Aviation Engineering School.

Retirement and Legacy

Upon retiring in 1962 with the rank of colonel, Zonov moved to Rostov-on-Don and worked at Rostselmash as chief of the tool shop and safety engineer. He also held various positions in the All-Union Society of Inventors and Rationalizers and the construction industry.

Panteley Petrovich Zonov passed away on January 15, 1998, and was laid to rest in Rostov-on-Don. His legacy of bravery and dedication continues to inspire generations of Russians.
