Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Church
His Beatitude Abune Dioskoros, Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Church, was consecrated in April 2007 with the unanimous approval of the Holy Synod.
Early Life and Monasticism
Born in 1935 in Eritrea, Dioskoros entered the Monastery Abuna Abranyos.
Episcopal Ordination
On May 19, 1994, Pope Shenouda III of the Coptic Orthodox Church ordained Dioskoros as Bishop of Saraye, a diocese in southwestern Eritrea.
Patriarchal Election
In April 2007, Dioskoros was elected Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Church.
Controversy and Recognition
In 2008, reports emerged that some Eritrean churches did not recognize Patriarch Dioskoros as legitimate, instead continuing to consider his predecessor, Patriarch Antonios, as the rightful leader. Antonios had been deposed after criticizing the Eritrean government, a move that was widely condemned by other Eastern Orthodox churches, which refused to recognize Dioskoros's patriarchy.
