Patrick Bruel: A Multifaceted Star
Patrick Bruel, a French musician, actor, and poker player, was born with a passion for soccer but harbored a deep appreciation for music of all genres, from classical to rock. Born Patrick Maurice Benguigui in 1959 in Tlemcen, Algeria, his parents divorced when he was a year old, and he was raised by his mother, a French teacher.
Early Life and Influences
After Algeria gained independence in 1962, Bruel and his mother moved to Paris. Music continued to captivate Bruel, and he became enamored with guitarists like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Jeff Beck. He also immersed himself in the works of poets and singers like Georges Brassens and Jacques Brel.
A fateful day in 1975 proved transformative for Bruel when he attended a concert by Michel Sardou. Inspired, he abandoned his soccer aspirations and resolved to pursue a career in music.
Music and Acting Beginnings
After high school, Bruel attended university while working part-time as a singer at Club Méditerranée. Through an ad in the newspaper, he landed his first acting role in the 1979 drama "Le coup de sirocco." During this period, he changed his stage name from Patrick Benguigui to Patrick Bruel.
Bruel embarked on a journey to New York City in 1979, seeking bohemian experiences and hoping to make a living with his guitar. There, he met his future collaborator and friend, Gérard Presgurvic.
Upon his return to Paris, Bruel continued acting and collaborated with agent Margot Capelier. His debut single, "Vide," released in 1982, was met with little success, but his follow-up track, "Marre de cette nana-là," gained massive popularity, particularly among female audiences.
Rise to Stardom
1986 marked a significant year for Bruel. He released his first album, "De face," which he co-wrote with Presgurvic. Despite not being a commercial success, it paved the way for Bruel's breakthrough album, "Alors, regarde," in 1989.
The release of "Alors, regarde" catapulted Bruel into superstardom. He embarked on a series of sold-out tours, facing overwhelming fan enthusiasm that often resulted in extended performances and additional shows.
Recognition and Accolades
Bruel received the prestigious "Victoire de la musique" award for "Best Male Artist of the Year" in 1992. He also won accolades for his performances in the films "Profil bas" and "Toutes peines confondues" in 1993.
Continued Success and Legacy
Bruel's subsequent albums, such as "Bruel" (1994) and "Entre deux" (2002), continued to be highly successful. He has released 11 studio albums to date and starred in over 40 films.
In addition to his music and acting careers, Bruel is an international poker player and commentator for the World Poker Tour in France.
Personal Life
Bruel was married to Amanda Sthers from 2003 to 2007, with whom he had two sons, Oscar and Léon. Since 2009, he has been in a relationship with model and television presenter Céline Bosquet.
