Birth and Early Career

Jacques Laffite was born into a family with connections in the transportation industry. In 1975, he began his racing career in the French Formula Renault series, transitioning to the European Formula 3 Championship in 1977.

Formula 2 and Formula 1 Debut

Laffite achieved notable success in Formula 3, earning two victories and three second-place finishes during the 1978 season. Despite finishing third overall, behind Jan Lammers and Anders Olofsson, his impressive performance caught the attention of Formula 1 teams. He made his Formula 2 debut in Japan that same year.

In 1979, Laffite competed primarily in Formula 2. However, he received an unexpected opportunity to replace Derek Daly at the Ensign team in the Formula 1 World Championship. Despite facing some qualifying challenges, he managed to finish 13th in the Canadian Grand Prix.

Formula 1 Stint and Return to Formula 2

Laffite continued to race in Formula 1 until the Dutch Grand Prix that year. He was subsequently replaced by Marc Surer. Following his departure from Formula 1, Laffite returned to Formula 2.

Later Career

In 1980, Laffite made his final Formula 1 appearance at the non-championship Spanish Grand Prix. He transitioned to endurance racing, competing in sports car events. Upon retiring from professional racing, Laffite became an instructor at the AGS racing school in France.
