Paul Annacone: A Tennis Legend on and off the Court

Early Life and Collegiate Career

Paul Annacone, born in 1963, picked up tennis at the tender age of eight and went undefeated at the league level in his freshman year of high school. After graduating, he played tennis for the University of Tennessee for three years, winning the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Player of the Year award and consistently ranking among the conference's and nation's top players.

Professional Tennis Career

Annacone turned professional in 1988, reaching a career-high ranking of No. 12 in the world and No. 6 in the United States. He competed in ATP events until 1992, accumulating a career match record of 157-131. He won three singles titles and reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. Notably, Annacone was the highest-ranked American at the 1988 Australian Open.

Doubles Success

Annacone excelled in doubles, capturing 14 championships and achieving a world ranking as high as No. 3. He triumphed at the 1985 Australian Open with Christo van Rensburg and the 1990 US Open with David Wheaton.

Coaching Legacy

Pete Sampras Era

Annacone's coaching career began with Pete Sampras in February 1995. Under Annacone's tutelage, Sampras won 14 Grand Slam titles, including seven victories at Wimbledon, and became the world's No. 1 player. The partnership lasted until 2001, with a brief hiatus in 2002.

British Davis Cup Coach

In 2008, Annacone took on the role of Great Britain's Davis Cup coach. Despite his efforts, the team lost to Austria in the playoffs and was relegated to the second group the following year. Annacone departed from the position in 2010.

Roger Federer's Triumphs

In August 2010, Annacone became Roger Federer's coach. Together, they achieved two world championships, Federer reclaimed the No. 1 ranking, and triumphed at Wimbledon for a seventh time.

Author and Speaker

In 2006, Annacone released a series of instructional DVDs, showcasing his strategies and gameplay approaches. He frequently speaks at tennis events and coaches around the world.
