Paul Birchall: The Former School Teacher Turned Pirate Wrestler
Early Life and EducationPaul Birchall, better known by his ring name "Paul Burchill," was born and raised in Surrey, England. In his early life, he worked as a school teacher. However, a visit to the Frontier Wrestling Alliance (FWA) academy and a meeting with academy manager Mark Sloan sparked a passion for wrestling.
FWA Beginnings
In 2001, Birchall began his wrestling training under Sloan at the FWA academy. He made his in-ring debut in August 2002 under the moniker "Paul Birchall." Initially, he interfered in matches and attacked other wrestlers before they could even begin their contests.
In October, at the "Uprising" event, Birchall defeated two members of The New Breed team single-handedly, even though the match had not yet officially started. Birchall continued this trend, eventually defeating four opponents in a single match.
OVW Championship Success
After a stint in Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), Birchall joined WWE's "SmackDown" brand in 2005. In September, he unsuccessfully competed in a battle royal for the OVW Heavyweight Championship. However, he later earned a title shot by defeating Seth Skyfire.
In the title match, Chet the Jet defeated Jacob Duncan, but Birchall interfered and hit the champion with a steel chair, claiming his desire for the championship. This led to Birchall winning the OVW Championship.
Pirate Gimmick and WWE Debut
In 2006, Birchall formed an alliance with fellow Englishman William Regal. He made his WWE debut by interfering in one of Regal's matches, helping him defeat his opponent. However, this partnership ended in February 2006.
Birchall then adopted a pirate persona, claiming to be a descendant of Blackbeard. Despite initial resistance from Vince McMahon, Birchall's pirate gimmick became popular with the audience.
Return to WWE and ECW
After a series of appearances on "Heat," Birchall returned to WWE television as a heel. He teamed with fellow FWA graduate Katie Lea, who portrayed his sister. They had mixed success together.
In December 2008, Birchall and Lea moved to the ECW brand. They lost their first tag team match to Gabriel and Alicia Fox. Birchall also lost to Gabriel in his first singles match in ECW.
Hurricane Rivalry and ECW Departure
In 2009, Birchall feuded with The Hurricane. In a high-stakes match, Birchall put his career on the line against The Hurricane's mask. Birchall lost, forcing him to leave ECW.
Post-WWE Career
After ECW folded, Birchall was released from his WWE contract. He competed in several independent promotions.
Personal Life
Birchall is married with two children. He also works as a firefighter. His brother, Sean Birchall, was an army officer who was killed in Afghanistan in 2009.
