Biography of Paul Duchesnay

Paul Duchesnay is a former figure skater who specialized in ice dancing. He competed alongside his sister Isabelle Duchesnay and represented both Canada and France throughout his career. The siblings achieved great success, becoming World Champions in 1991 and winning silver medals at the Olympic Games in 1992.

Early Life and Career

Paul was born in France but moved to Aylmer, Quebec, Canada with his parents when he was one year old. It was there that he began his journey in figure skating. In 1982, Paul and Isabelle had their first major success, finishing second in the Canadian Junior Championships. Their skating style was unique and revolutionary for the time.

However, their original style received harsh criticism from the Canadian Figure Skating Federation, prompting Paul and Isabelle to switch teams. Since 1985, they competed for France, their mother's homeland. One of their most memorable performances was at the 1988 Olympics, where their free dance was inspired by the sounds of the jungle and the beat of drums. Although the audience loved it, the judges placed them in eighth position. Nevertheless, the Duchesnays continued to skate in their innovative style.

World Championships and Olympic Games

Paul and Isabelle achieved third and second place finishes at the World Championships in 1989 and 1990, respectively. They claimed their only gold medal at the World Championships in 1991 in Munich. The duo had high hopes of winning gold at the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, but a mistake during their performance placed them second behind Marina Klimova and Sergei Ponomarenko. The Olympics marked their last amateur competition.

Later Career and Personal Life

After retiring from competitive skating, Paul and Isabelle continued to perform as professionals until a serious accident involving Paul occurred in 1996. Currently, Paul Duchesnay works as a coach in the United States, sharing his expertise and passion for figure skating with a new generation of athletes.
