Early Life and EducationPauline Collins was born in 1940 in Exmouth, Devon, England, to Irish Catholic parents. She received her education in London, where she trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama.
Early Career
Before pursuing an acting career, Collins worked as a teacher until 1962. That same year, she made her stage debut in Windsor, England, in "The Gazelle on Park Lane." Three years later, she debuted in London's West End in the musical "Passion Flower Hotel."
Film and Television Breakthrough
Collins' film debut was in the 1966 British film "Secrets of a Windmill Girl." However, she gained greater fame in theater and television. In the 1960s, she appeared in "Doctor Who" as Samantha Briggs, "The Saint," "Unnatural History," and "Upstairs, Downstairs," in which she played the servant Sarah to great acclaim.
"Shirley Valentine" Triumph
In 1988, Collins performed in a one-woman play in London titled "Shirley Valentine." She reprised the role a year later in the Broadway sequel and the eponymous film adaptation, in which she appeared nude. Her performance earned her Oscar and Golden Globe nominations and a BAFTA Award.
Continued Success
From 1989 to 1992, Collins starred alongside her husband in the drama series "Evergreen." Other notable film roles include Joan Bethel in "The Playboys" (1992) and Daisy Drummond in "The Road to Paradise" (1997). In recent years, Collins has primarily focused on theater and television, including appearances in "Doctor Who," "Bleak House," and the television films "Man and Boy" (2002) and "Sparkling Cyanide" (2003).
Recognition and Honors
In 2001, Pauline Collins was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.
