Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Born Robert Peabo Bryson on April 13, 1951, in Greenville, South Carolina, Peabo Bryson has had a passion for music and singing from a young age. Blessed with a gifted voice and musical talent, he began his musical journey as a vocalist with the group Al Freeman & the Upsetters in 1965.
Professional Career
In 1968, Bryson joined Moses Dillard & the Tex-Town Display, where he honed his skills as a performer. In the 1970s, he entered a partnership with Atlanta's Bang Records and played in Michael Zager's band, Moon Band.
Solo Success
In 1979, Bryson embarked on his solo career with the release of his debut album, "Reaching for the Sky." This album achieved gold status, and its title track became a hit, peaking at number eleven on the R&B charts. Bryson's talent for duets was showcased through collaborations with renowned artists such as Natalie Cole, Roberta Flack, Melissa Manchester, and Regina Belle.
Grammy Awards and Disney Collaborations
Bryson's career soared in the 1990s. In 1991, he received his first Grammy Award for his stunning performance of the song "Beauty and the Beast" from the Disney animated film of the same name, sung with Celine Dion. His second Grammy came in 1993 for his enchanting composition for the Disney film "Aladdin."
Financial Struggles
Unfortunately, in the early 2000s, Bryson faced financial hardship. He was forced to sell both of his Grammy Awards to settle over a million dollars in tax debt. This period was particularly difficult for Bryson emotionally, and he also auctioned off much of his property, including valuable musical instruments and equipment.
Recent Work
In 2007, Bryson released his final album, "Missing You," under the Peak Records label, a subsidiary of Concord Music Group. This album showcased his continued talent and left a lasting legacy in the music industry.
