Peder Severin Krøyer: Danish Master of Realism

Peder Severin Krøyer, also known as P.S. Krøyer or Sören, was a renowned Danish realist painter born in Norway in 1851.

Early Life and Education

As a child, Krøyer lived with his maternal aunt's family due to his mother's inability to care for him. At age nine, he began private art lessons and enrolled in the Copenhagen Technical Institute at age ten. He later studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1864 to 1870.

Influence of Impressionism

Krøyer spent time in Europe from 1877 to 1881, where he encountered Impressionist masters like Monet, Sisley, and Renoir. Their influence can be seen in his work, particularly in his handling of light and color.

Life and Career in Skagen

From 1882, Krøyer frequently visited Skagen, a remote fishing village in northern Jutland. The area's picturesque surroundings became a favorite subject for his paintings, and he spent many summers there.

Personal Life

In 1888, Krøyer married Marie Martha Mathilde Triepke. Their relationship was tumultuous, as Krøyer struggled with mental illness and syphilis. They had a daughter in 1895, but Krøyer agreed to a divorce in 1905 after Marie began an affair with a Swedish composer.

Later Years and Legacy

Despite his declining eyesight, Krøyer continued to paint until his death. He died at the age of 58 in 1909 due to complications from syphilis. Krøyer's works are known for their vibrant colors, atmospheric qualities, and naturalistic depictions of everyday life. Two of his most famous paintings, "Summer Evening on the Southern Beach of Skagen with Anna Ancher and Marie Krøyer" and "St. John's Eve Bonfire on Skagen Beach," are showcased at the Skagen Museum.
