Early Life and Family

Pennelope Eastwood was born on April 16, 1953, to Reginald Eastwood, a businessman, and Marian Hood. She had a younger brother named Peter (1955-2013). Eastwood's father, a former butcher, amassed a fortune by establishing a successful restaurant chain.

Education and Social Circle

Pennelope received her early education in Switzerland and later graduated from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Her father's wealth secured her a place in high society, and she reportedly had a brief romance with Prince Charles, Prince of Wales.

Marriage to Lord Norton Knatchbull

In 1979, Penelope married Lord Norton Knatchbull, the son of John Knatchbull, 7th Baron Brabourne, and Patricia Mountbatten. Through Patricia, her husband was a grandson of Louis Mountbatten and closely related to the British royal family. The wedding attracted significant media attention due to the groom's royal connections and the bride's past relationship with Prince Charles.

Countess Mountbatten of Burma

Upon her father-in-law's death in 2005, Penelope became the Baroness Brabourne. In 2017, when her mother-in-law passed away, she became the Countess Mountbatten of Burma. Since her marriage, she has maintained a close association with the royal family, counting Prince Philip as a close friend and being among the select guests invited to his funeral.

Royal Events and European Connections

Countess Mountbatten of Burma is a regular attendee at official events attended by Queen Elizabeth II. She also maintains ties with other reigning European dynasties, having served as a godmother to Prince Philippos of Greece and Denmark and attending the funerals of Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg and the 50th anniversary celebration of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

Leonora Children's Cancer Fund

In 1994, in memory of her daughter Leonora Knatchbull, who died of kidney cancer at age five, Countess Mountbatten of Burma established the Leonora Children's Cancer Fund, which supports children with cancer.

High Sheriff of Romsey

In 2010, Penelope became the first female High Sheriff of Romsey, Hampshire, and was sworn in on March 2, 2011. She is also President of The Compassionate Friends and Patron of The Countess Mountbatten of Burma Legion of Frontiersmen, among other charitable affiliations.

Personal Life

Penelope and Norton Knatchbull had three children together: Lord Nicholas Charles Louis Norton (1981); Alexandra Victoria Edwina Diana (1982); and Leonora Louise Mary Elizabeth (1986-1991). In 2010, the couple began living separately. Lord Brabourne moved to the Bahamas but returned after four years, and Penelope eventually allowed him to move back into their family home.
