Peter Allen: Australian Musical Virtuoso
Born in Tenterfield, Australia, on February 10, 1944, Peter Allen embarked on his musical journey alongside Chris Bell in the Allen Brothers. Their cabaret and television appearances made them a household name in Australia throughout the 1960s.
Breakthrough in London and the US
After relocating to Hong Kong, Allen's talent caught the attention of Marc Herron, who facilitated his move to London and later the United States. In the 1970s, Allen ventured into acting, with his own projects and guest appearances, though he achieved greater recognition as a composer.
Global Songwriting Success
Allen's compositions, notably "Don't Cry Out Loud," "I'd Rather Leave While I'm In Love," and "I Honestly Love You," became international hits when performed by renowned American artists. The latter song reached number one in both the US and Canada, earning two prestigious Grammy Awards.
Solo Album and Return to Australia
In 1977, Allen released his solo album, "Taught By Experts," which soared in Australia but did not experience the same success in the US. Despite this, Allen's follow-up album in 1980 and the hit single "Fly Away" from 1981 solidified his popularity in America. Throughout the 1980s, he also maintained a strong presence in Australian television.
Marriage and Legacy
Peter Allen's only marriage, to renowned performer Liza Minnelli, ended in divorce. He passed away on June 18, 1992, and his ashes were scattered over the ocean as per his wishes. Allen's musical contributions continue to inspire and entertain audiences worldwide.
