Peter Anich, an Austrian cartographer and astronomer, made significant contributions to the field of mapping during the 18th century.

Early Life and Education

Anich was born on February 22, 1723, in Oberperfuss, Austria, into a family of farmers. From a young age, he displayed an aptitude for astronomy, geometry, and mechanics. Despite his farming responsibilities, he pursued these interests alongside his agricultural work.

Jesuit Studies and Globe Making

In 1751, Anich enrolled at the Jesuit college in Innsbruck, where he studied mathematics and physics. His exceptional skills in crafting globes and mathematical instruments caught the attention of the Holy Roman Empress Maria Theresa.

Commission to Map Tyrol

Empress Maria Theresa commissioned Anich to create a detailed map of Tyrol. In collaboration with his fellow cartographer Blasius Hueber, Anich meticulously surveyed the region, producing a comprehensive map that was completed shortly before his untimely death.

Legacy and Recognition

Peter Anich died on September 1, 1766, in Innsbruck. His map of Tyrol, published in 1774 on 21 sheets, became a landmark in cartographic history. In his honor, the Sonnenobservatorium Peter Anich, a solar observatory in South Tyrol, bears his name. Additionally, he was featured on an Austrian postage stamp in 1966, acknowledging his contributions to science and mapping.
