Peter Care: An English Director of Music Videos, Commercials, and Films

Peter Care

Peter Care is an English director known for his work in music videos, commercials, and films. He has worked on music videos for various bands and artists such as R.E.M., Bruce Springsteen, Roy Orbison, and Depeche Mode.

Early Career

Care began his directing career while attending the Sheffield School of Arts in Northern England. After graduating, he started working for the Sheffield Independent Film Company, which was funded by the Arts Council and Channel 4. During his time at the company, Care wrote, directed, and produced several documentary films and two short films. One of his short films, "Johnny Yesno," featured music by the iconic British band Cabaret Voltaire.

Success in Music Videos

Following his early work, Care gained recognition for his successful music videos. He created a series of highly acclaimed videos for bands, with his video for "Sensoria" becoming one of the most successful music videos of its genre. In 1985, the LA Times named it the "Video of the Year," and it was played repeatedly on MTV for seven months. It even became part of the exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Shift to Mainstream Artists

After his initial success, Care shifted his focus to working with mainstream artists like Killing Joke, Thomas Dolby, ABC, Bananarama, Depeche Mode, Fine Young Cannibals, and Public Image Ltd. His move to the United States, along with his work at Limelight Films, allowed him to collaborate with a wider range of artists. He directed videos for Robbie Neville, Simply Red, Paul Carrack, Belinda Carlisle, Anita Baker, and Tina Turner.

Success with R.E.M. and Advertising

In 1992, Care co-founded the company Satellite, a subsidiary of Propaganda Films. This marked a turning point in his career as he worked with renowned artists such as Suzanne Vega, Robert Cray, Los Lobos, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and notably, R.E.M. He directed five music videos and the concert film "Road Movie" for R.E.M. Additionally, Care found success in the world of advertising, creating commercials for companies such as Nintendo, Levi's, Lee Jeans, Microsoft, Coca-Cola, ESPN, MTV, Phillips, Southwestern Bell, Saturn, Polaroid, MCI, and Mastercard.

Transition to Feature Films

Care's first feature film, "The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys," was released in 2002 and produced by Jodie Foster's company, Egg Pictures. The film starred actors Emily Hirsch, Jena Malone, and Kieran Culkin and was awarded the "Best Feature Film" at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Recent Work

Since 2002, Care has returned to his active involvement in commercials. He has received numerous awards for his music videos and has directed two additional videos for R.E.M. As of now, his career remains at its peak, and any decline in his success is yet to be seen.
