Early Life and Military Career

Pyotr Petrovich Schmidt was born on February 5, 1867, in Odessa into a family of hereditary naval officers. He graduated from the Maritime School in St. Petersburg in 1886 and served in the Baltic and Pacific oceans. In 1898, he retired with the rank of Lieutenant.

Revolutionary Activities

Schmidt actively participated in the 1905-07 Revolution. He organized the "Union of Officers for the People" in Sevastopol and helped establish the "Odessa Society for Mutual Aid of Merchant Navy Seamen" - one of the first trade union organizations in maritime transport.

Arrest and Release

On October 20, 1905, Schmidt was arrested for speaking at rallies and participating in a political demonstration. Workers elected him as a lifelong deputy of the Sevastopol Council of Workers' Deputies, who secured his release on November 3.

Military Leader of the Sevastopol Uprising

As the Sevastopol Uprising erupted, the military organization of social democrats invited Schmidt to lead the rebellion. He arrived on the cruiser "Ochakov" on November 14, where a red flag was raised as a symbol of rebellion.

Arrest and Execution

Schmidt was arrested on November 15. After a trial from February 7-18, 1906, he was sentenced to death and executed by firing squad on March 19.

Legacy and Commemoration

Schmidt's revolutionary legacy has been honored in various ways. In 1926, he became an honorary member of the Sevastopol Soviet of Workers' Deputies. A museum was opened in his name in Ochakov in 1962, and a monument was erected on Berezan Island in 1972.
