Early Life and Education
Witold Lutosławski Anderszewski was born in Warsaw, Poland, to a Polish father and a Hungarian-Jewish mother. He spent his early years in Poland and France, where his father worked. In 1990, he settled primarily in Paris.
Anderszewski studied at the Warsaw Academy of Music, as well as in Lyon, Strasbourg (with Hélène Boschi), and the University of Southern California. He also attended masterclasses with Leon Fleisher and Murray Perahia. However, in an interview, Anderszewski acknowledged that the playing and charisma of Sviatoslav Richter had the most profound influence on him.
International Recognition
In 1990, Anderszewski made a mark at the Leeds International Piano Competition. In the third round, he delivered a brilliant performance of Beethoven's "Diabelli Variations." However, he abruptly halted his performance of Anton Webern's "Variations," dissatisfied with his playing. He withdrew from the competition, but the judges' high praise paved the way for his British debut.
Recording Career and Collaborations
After the Leeds competition, Anderszewski embarked on a successful recording career. He released a series of acclaimed recordings of Johann Sebastian Bach's partitas and suites, as well as works by Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Webern. In 2000, he received Poland's Szymanowski Prize for his performances of Szymanowski's piano compositions.
Anderszewski has also collaborated extensively with violinist Viktoria Mullova. Together, they recorded the complete Johannes Brahms sonatas, as well as works by Claude Debussy, Leoš Janáček, Sergei Prokofiev, and others.
