Early Life and Education
Pyotr Isotovich Naumov was born on October 14, 1915, in the village of Akatovo, now part of the Dzerzhinsky District of the Kaluga Region, Russia. Hailing from a working-class family, Naumov pursued education and graduated from a vocational school before becoming a lathe operator in a Leningrad factory.
Military Career
In 1936, Naumov joined the Red Army and embarked on his aviation training. He graduated from the Kharkov Military Aviation School in 1938 as a fighter pilot. From August 1941, he served in the frontlines of the Great Patriotic War, actively participating in the Battle of Stalingrad.
Air Combat and the Battle of Stalingrad
During his military tenure, Naumov flew 215 combat missions and engaged in 40 aerial battles, during which he personally shot down 12 enemy aircraft and participated in the downing of 5 more as part of a group. Notably, on November 24, 1942, he led his squadron in a fierce engagement that resulted in the destruction of 27 German aircraft, including a Ju-52 transport carrying a large contingent of German officers.
Recognition and Award of the Hero of the Soviet Union
Naumov's exceptional courage and skill in air combat were recognized with the prestigious title of Hero of the Soviet Union on August 24, 1943. The honor was bestowed for his outstanding bravery and military prowess in battles against the enemy.
Post-War Career
After the war, Naumov continued his service in the Air Force, attending the Military Academy of the General Staff and graduating in 1956. He retired in 1965 as a Major General of Aviation and settled in Moscow, where he worked as a senior engineer at an energy institute.
Awards and Legacy
Throughout his military career, Naumov received numerous decorations, including two Orders of Lenin, three Orders of the Red Banner, Order of Suvorov 3rd class, Order of the Patriotic War 1st class, Order of the Red Star, and the Order of the Badge of Honor, as well as various medals. He passed away on June 1, 1987, leaving behind a legacy of valor and dedication in the defense of his country.
