Soviet Fighter Ace Pyotr Shavurin
Early Life and EducationPyotr Shavurin was born on April 23, 1918, in Yekaterinoslav (present-day Dnipropetrovsk) to a working-class family. After completing 7th grade, he graduated from the FZU (Factory School). He worked as a mechanic in a tram depot before joining the local flying club and becoming an instructor.
Military Career
Shavurin enlisted in the Soviet Army in 1938 and graduated from the Bataisk Military Aviation Pilot School in 1940. He saw action in the Great Patriotic War from June 1941.
Heroic Aerial Maneuvers
As deputy commander of his squadron in the 722nd Fighter Aviation Regiment, Shavurin performed two daring aerial maneuvers. On July 27, 1942, he intercepted a Ju-88 bomber near Gorky (present-day Nizhny Novgorod) and forced it down by ramming it with the propeller of his MiG-3. On December 27, 1942, he repeated this maneuver near the Povorino railway station in the Voronezh region, this time against a Ju 88 reconnaissance aircraft.
Hero of the Soviet Union
For his heroism, Pyotr Shavurin was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on February 14, 1943.
Post-War Career and Legacy
After the war, Shavurin continued to serve in the Air Force and graduated from the Air Force Academy. He retired as a colonel in 1974 and settled in Dnipropetrovsk, where he worked at the local airport.
Shavurin was awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Patriotic War, First Class, and the Order of the Red Star, among other medals. His name is included on the memorial obelisk in the city of Pavlovo, and he is an honorary citizen of Dnipropetrovsk.
