Biography of Petra Schurmann

Petra Schurmann was a German model, beauty pageant winner, television presenter, and actress. She started her career in the 1960s, appearing on radio and television shows, primarily on the Munich-based 'Bayerischer Rundfunk'. In addition to her work in the entertainment industry, Schurmann also tried her hand at acting and writing.

Miss World Victory and National Competition

In 1956, Petra Schurmann won the 'Miss World' beauty pageant, representing West Germany. Interestingly, as of 2012, she remains the only German woman to have ever held the title of 'Miss World'. Gabriella Brum, who won in 1980, can be considered an exception; however, she relinquished the title a day later, making it difficult to consider her a true 'Miss World'. It is worth noting that Schurmann only placed third in the national competition 'Miss Germany', but she was sent to the international competition in London because of her superior English language skills.

Academic Pursuits and Career

Schurmann achieved her victory in the international competition while still a student. At the time, she was studying philosophy and art history at the universities of Bonn and Cologne. After winning the title, she continued her studies in Munich. In the 1960s, Petra Schurmann began appearing on radio and television shows, predominantly on the Munich-based 'Bayerischer Rundfunk'. She also dabbled in acting and writing during this time.

Personal Life and Tragedy

In 1973, Petra Schurmann married Dr. Gerhard Freund, a physician. Interestingly, their romance had begun much earlier, back in 1967, when Petra gave birth to their daughter, Alexandra, without attracting unnecessary attention from the press. At the time, Dr. Freund was still married to German actress Marianne Koch. Alexandra followed in her mother's footsteps and had a successful career in the Munich broadcasting industry. Unfortunately, her promising career was cut short when she tragically died in a car accident in 2001 at the age of 34.

Later Years and Passing

The death of her daughter deeply affected Petra Schurmann, and she never fully recovered. It is known that they had an extremely close relationship. In her later years, Petra and her husband settled in a house on the shores of Lake Starnberg, south of Munich. Dr. Gerhard Freund passed away in August 2008, after 35 years of marriage. Petra Schurmann herself succumbed to a prolonged illness on January 14, 2010, at the age of 76.
