Eugene Joseph Carey, known professionally as Philip Carey, was an American actor who rose to fame in the 1950s.
Early Life and Career
Born on July 15, 1925, in Hackensack, New Jersey, Carey began his acting career in the popular 1950s drama series "Ford Theatre." He also starred in several feature films, including "I Was a Communist for the FBI" (1951), "This Woman Is Dangerous" (1952), and "Jane Calamity" (1953).
Television Roles
Carey's television credits include the title role in the 1959 ABC series "Philip Marlowe" and four different characters in the detective series "77 Sunset Strip." He also played Captain Edward Parmalee in the Western series "Laredo" (1965-1967), which co-starred William Smith, Peter Brown, and Neville Brand.
Long-Term Roles
From 1979 to 2007, Carey became a household name for his portrayal of Texan Asa Buchanan in the ABC soap opera "One Life to Live." He also gained recognition for his humorous "Granny Goose" potato chips commercials, where he played a rambunctious cowboy.
Personal Life
Carey was married twice, first to Maureen Peppler in 1949, with whom he had a son, Jeff, and two daughters, Linda and Lisa. At the time of his death, he was married to Colleen Welch, with whom he had a son, Sean, and a daughter, Shannon.
Health and Legacy
In 2006, Carey was diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent chemotherapy. He left "One Life to Live" in 2007 after appearing in nine additional episodes between January 3 and March 16. He made a few brief appearances in the series in July 2008 and last appeared on the long-running soap opera on December 29, 2008. Carey died from lung cancer on February 6, 2009, at the age of 83, less than a week after the death of fellow "One Life to Live" star Clint Ritchie.
